Requirements and Procedure of the CPSA‑A Examination

Step 1: Earn 70 credit points from the three competency areas

The CPSA Advanced Level is structured through training modules from the three competency areas: methodology, technology, and communication. Each training module conveys specific competencies for which participants receive the corresponding credit points (e.g., 10 CP in technology and 20 CP in methodology). If you can demonstrate a total of 70 credit points across all three competency areas, you are eligible to register for the CPSA‑A examination. You typically meet this
requirement after completing three training modules. To receive the official certificate of participation including proof of the earned credit points, your attendance rate must be at least 75% for each training.

Step 2: Check whether you meet all the requirements

To register for the CPSA Advanced Level examination, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Completed certification as a Certified Professional for Software Architecture – Foundation Level (CPSA‑F®)
  • At least 3 years of full‑time professional experience in the IT industry, including a description of your involvement in the design and development of at least two IT systems
  • At least 70 CP from the competency areas of the CPSA‑A Level
  • Confidentiality agreement regarding the CPSA‑A examination assignment
Step 3: Work on the examination assignment

If you meet all the requirements, you can register directly with the accredited certification bodies for the CPSA Advanced Level examination. You will then receive your examination assignment. You have three months to complete it. The workload is approximately 40 hours, and your solution must be documented. Once your solution has been submitted on time to the certification body, it will be reviewed by two examiners.

Step 4: Oral defense of your solution

During an oral defense, you present your solution to the examiners. If it is confirmed that you meet all requirements and the examiners consider your written work and defense satisfactory, you will receive the certificate Certified Professional for Software Architecture – Advanced Level (CPSA‑A®). The entire examination can be taken in either German or English.
